There are many ways that law enforcement officers can suffer back injuries, from car accidents to back strains that develop during the course and scope of their employment, while performing their usual, customary, repetitive, and strenuous job duties, while on active duty.

For example, there is a unique presumption that applies to peace officers who wear duty belts, which they use to carry items like guns, handcuffs, flashlights and more. These heavy belts have caused back injuries so often that California Labor Code Section 3213.2 specifically applies a presumptive lower back compensable injury.

This applies to officers who have been employed for five or more years, if they were working in a full-time position and were on salary. Most duty belts qualify unless they have been modified in such a way that the officer has not carried the expected equipment.
